Architectural History

When created, the then drinking-water reservoir was named after Waterboard Commissioner Herman Silver. These days the reservoir no longer holds drinking water and the hills surrounding the reservoir are now full of celebrities, mansions and some of the best real estate in Los Angeles. One of the most notable of which is the historic Canfield-Moreno Estate, also known as The Paramour Mansion or The Crestmont, which was designated a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument in 1988.

Noted for its Modernist and Avant Garde architecture, Silver Lake is the place to see several homes designed by Richard Neutra, one of the founders of the Mid-Century Modern architecrual style, as well as a museum of his works.
